What is the significance of the nickname "Tar Heels" for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill?

"Tar Heel" is also an NC state nickname, and the claim is that it comes from the fact that the state was once an important source of tar and pitch, used in shipbuilding among other industries. According to this site, the poet Walt Whitman called North Carolinians "Tarboilers."
We've got the basketball game on right now. I don't know what I'll do if North Carolina, my ancestral state, ends up playing Ohio State, Ohio being the place of my birth. Divided loyalties ...
