"Obelisk" comes from Greek "obeliskos" and ultimately from "obelos" -- meaning "stick," "spit," "dagger," or "needle." The word "obelus," which is a sort of 17th-century Latinized Greek, is, however, derived from the same root. It is the very familar symbol for "division" in mathematics. An "obolus" was a Greek coin, again from the same root:
