A folkloric romance involving star-crossed lovers (who, in one old version, might have been a shepherd and a shepherdess) passed from one culture to another and is said to have been based on a true story in which the male lover became a significant poet. In the West, however, if the story is known at all, it is as the inspiration for a famed song composed by one of Rock's greatest musicians when he was in love with another man's wife. What is this romance, and what is that song?

Yes, tn, it is "Layla and Majnun," Majnun now being identified with the poet Qays bin al-Mullawah, and the song "Layla" apparently having drawn its inspiration from the tale. (I'm a great Clapton fan.)
A silver mace to you!
