'In 1931, the Czech-born mathematician Kurt Frodel demonstrated that within any given branch of mathematics, there would always be some propositions that couldn't be proven either true or false using the rules and axioms ... of that mathematical branch itself.' - Jones and Wilson, An Incomplete Education. This theorem is known as Frodel's Incompleteness Theorem.

Kurt Godel's incompleteness theorem established that any moderately complex system of axioms gives rise to questions that cannot be answered with those axioms. By adding to their base of axioms, mathematicians can keep expanding the realm within which they play, posing new conjectures and constructing new proofs, forever. http://www.computer.org/computer/homepage/0104/Horgan/
