Grand Hotel won the Best Picture Oscar -- it is the only film to have won the Award [without winning any others] and not being nominated [in another category].

Yes, that's the one I thought of too, until I re-read the question again.

I may be wrong, but the question asks for a film who has won an Academy Award for a category to which it was NOT nominated for in the first place.

Could be I just need a little sleep...

Yup Peasy...that's what I put in the brackets. I figured they just hadn't read their source correctly because I couldn't find anything else.

The question is worded correctly and I have it on good authority that there is an answer.

There were no "officially announced" nominees for the second award ceremony, held in 1930, so it could be "The Broadway Melody" (1929) that won Best Picture at that event.

It beat other officially nominated films and wasn't a special award.

A Midsummer Night's Dream (Achievement In Cinematography)

Hal Mohr was a write-in candidate, and therefore isn't officially considered to have received a nomination, although he did receive the award.

Nice job, zbeckabee! Imagine how shocked and upset the nominees must have been.
