Larry Doby of the Cleveland Indians became the second black MLB player and the first in the American League. Wearing number 14, Doby made his major league debut on July 5, 1947... just 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson's debut. He endured the same hardships as Robinson... Since Larry Doby played in a different league... and thus appeared in different cities against different teams... he was just as much the pioneer as Robinson.
Though not quite on par with Robinson, Doby nevertheless had a sensational major league career. He batted .283 and hit 253 homers during his 13 year MLB career (after five seasons in the Negro League). He was a key component in the Indians 1948 World Series Championship season, batting .301 and hitting 16 HR. He batted a team-leading .316 in the World Series.
Doby was also the second black major league manager after Frank Robinson, managing the White Sox for most of 1978. Doby passed away in 2003 at age 79.
Much like Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, Larry Doby's legacy has regrettably been relagated to a mere historical footnote and he is well known only to avid baseball history enthusiasts.
