In a quiz book I read that a mouse was the first animal in space. I have also read that it was a fruit fly, and in many quizzes it is said to be Laika the dog, although I think that is in orbit. Can anyone clarify?

The first object to orbit the Earth was Sputnik in October 1957. The Russians, however, quickly got the hang of sending animals into space. Flies, mice, dogs. Their Zond missions sent a couple of tortoises to the far side of the moon and back in July of 1968 (only a few months before The US sent humans to the Far Side on Apollo 8).
