Bill Berry left the band in 1997.

".......After seventeen years in the band he loves, he tells his closest friends that he is leaving R.E.M. for good...Stipe admitted that the band will be different without a major contributor: "For me, Mike, and Peter, as R.E.M... are we still R.E.M.? I guess a three-legged dog is still a dog. It just has to learn to run differently."

Can anyone explain how the periodic table works? How is it possible that the vertical groups correspond almost exactly to the increasing atomic mass of the elements? For instance, the alkali metals (group 1), alkaline earth metals (group 2) and noble gases (group 8) all have very different properties, yet somehow, if they were all arranged in order by their atomic masses, you would find that they could be arranged in a clear pattern of Group 1, Group 2, Group 8, Group 1, Group 2, Group 8, and so on. Is it just coincidence, or is there a scientific explanation for this?
