The 8th power of a number is its "zenzizenzizenzic."
Exhausting just to type that. However, the Italian was Leonardo of Pisa (1202, his term being "censo di censo," and the flowers being those lovely Fibonacci sunflowers; and the Welshman was Robert Recorde in 1557:
