I recall this question from a couple of years ago, and it prompted some refinement of the question then, as it surely does now.
Although Benoist used what we readily recognize as airplanes, there were airline companies operating prior to 1916. The first, opening in 1909, was DELAG, a German airship company that used Zeppelin manufactured ships. More info here:
