This would be the 'dead man's handle'. This control device must be kept under pressure and if released applies the brakes of the train. It safeguards the control of the train if anything was to happen to the driver.

This safety devise has evolved significantly, not only has the means of actuation include touch sensors, pedals, seat switches, key switches, etc. for the uniqueness of the operation have expanded, but it may always include automotive braking when track signals are not acknowledged, random checks not acknowledged (to prevent bypassing of the devise), violation of speed restricted areas, etc.
