I have heard both Brits and Aussies use the word "bloke." From where does this word come?

An excellent question. "Bloke" is a slang term meaning "man" and this site claims that it comes from Irish Traveller slang. I suspect that there are disputed origins. Moreover, in the U.S., "bloke" and "guy" would probably be regarded as synonomous, whereas in Britain, Australia, and New Zealand, that would, apparently, not be the case:

Since I asked an "excellent question" do I now get a silver mace?
