Though economic historians dispute the details, it happened around 370 years ago, some decades after something that we now regard as pretty, but reasonably common and ephemeral, had been introduced to a certain country from the southeast. At its height, the unusual "luxury" item that fueled it was traded on the Stock Exchange, and just one example might have sold for 6 times the annual wages paid to an average laborer. To what historical phenomenon am I referring?

I believe that you refer to the Tulip speculation in Holland. The country from the southeast was Turkey, right ?- Temujin2020

You are correct, temujin, but I'm going to ask you to provide a reference site before I award the silver mace.
I believe in the Posting Rules.

I'll refer you to Q52801, Frankie, from whence there is a link.

Thanks for the attempt at assistance, gmack, but the first link is no longer functional and the second is about a virus that is interesting but not quite relevant.
I'm afraid I wanted an up-to-date reference site. Here's one:

From what I recall it was quite an interesting link before it got eaten by that darned ubiquitous page 404!
