Though economic historians dispute the details, it happened around 370 years ago, some decades after something that we now regard as pretty, but reasonably common and ephemeral, had been introduced to a certain country from the southeast. At its height, the unusual "luxury" item that fueled it was traded on the Stock Exchange, and just one example might have sold for 6 times the annual wages paid to an average laborer. To what historical phenomenon am I referring?

I believe that you refer to the Tulip speculation in Holland. The country from the southeast was Turkey, right ?- Temujin2020

You are correct, temujin, but I'm going to ask you to provide a reference site before I award the silver mace.

Thanks for the attempt at assistance, gmack, but the first link is no longer functional and the second is about a virus that is interesting but not quite relevant.

I'm afraid I wanted an up-to-date reference site. Here's one:

And here's the splendid cover of Anne Goldgar's recent book "Tulipmania: Money, Honor, and Knowledge in the Dutch Golden Age," which inspired my question. The double portrait with tulip and bulb is by Michael van Mierevelt (1567-1641), for those who might be interested:

A question inspired by our local weather conditions: its origins are uncertain, but they can probably be dated to a European country 200 years ago. Decades later, it became a popular item associated with a couple of World's Fairs and an iconic structure. Today, some people regard it as merely "kitschy," but it did play a role in a great classic film and was the murder weapon in a much more recent movie. What is it, and what are those two films?

This country gives more money comparative to its GNP than any other country, and it is common for the inhabitants to have seperate bank accounts even when they have been married for decades. They open their Christmas gifts on New Years Eve, and the country itself is made up from one peninsula and many islands. What country is this, and who is the current monarch?

After oil, this is the most traded commodity. In fact, it is said that the ownership of this item can change up to 17 times due to trading between the time ships laden with it leave the country of origin and reach their destination. What are we talking about?
