A famous portraitist named after a plant painted a female nude, the sitter of which is being recently debated. The more well-known of the two main candidates is an ancestor of the wife of a UK party leader. What are the names of the artist, the painting, the two possible sitters and the politician's wife?

I'm assuming that this is Peter Lely's portrait of either Nell Gwyn or Barbara Villiers, mistresses of Charles II. I'd say that both women are pretty well known, and they both had chldren by Charles (Barbara had 5 or 6), so I'll have to do a little more work on the party leader's wife. But here's a site to start:

O.K., it seems that David Cameron's wife Samantha is a descendant of Nell -- though, really, Charles II had so many illegitimate children, just about anyone could make a claim like this.

An interesting aside: Samantha Cameron may be a descendant of Nell Gwyn, but David Cameron himself appears to be a descendant of William IV and HIS mistress, Dorothea Jordan (a couple who also produced a large number of illegitimate children).

    Incestuous institution, British politics ....

I didn't think it would take you long to unravel that one Frankie and a yay-plus for that side-info.
The curator of the Director of Chiddingstone replied to that article with a counter-argument that "pretty witty Nell" as Pepys called her, was indeed the subject.
It appears that Charles II (or "Charles the Third" as Nell knew him after two previous high-profile lovers of the same name) kept this painting behind a sliding panel in his bedchamber.
