In which country did the paper clip originate, not patented or invented but originate?

Norway are often credited with the paper clip's invention but as Smokey's link mentions, they were around in England (and possibly elsewhere) before the Norwegian, Johann Vaaler, got his German patent in 1900.
Besides, the clip that Vaaler invented wasn't the little Gem (or as the French call it, trombone) type that we see these days.
Having deprived the Norwegians of credit for their best known invention I must point out that they also gave us postage meters, skiing competitions, harpoon guns, canned anchovies and the cardiac massage.
Oh, and they reached the South Pole first.
