    Y isn't a vowel. At least not according to the Oxford English Dictionary.

    "Y" sometimes assumes the function of a vowel and can therefore be counted as one. That's why claiming that such words as "rhythm" and "syzygy" lack vowels is somewhat controversial.

    In elementry school I was always taught that the vowels are a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y.
