Since Easter Island is 2,000 miles or more from other population centers, such as Chile and Tahiti, where is it believed that the original inhabitants came from?

Easter Island (or Rapanui) has a culture similar to that of other islands in the Pacific. As the Maori in NZ appear to have broken away from a Polynesian tribe, it is argued that a similar thing happened with Rapanui.
It is unarguable that the ahu (big statues of people) are unique to Rapanui but the smybolism of a fertility god is reflected throughout the Pacific in various forms.
