What Flemish town is famous for a victory of the Duke of Marlborough over the French, for its tapestries that can be recognized by the mark of a pair of specs and for being the place where a famous Emperor had an affair with the daughter of a local tapestry-weaver, which resulted in the bastard child becoming Governor of the Netherlands?

    Question #81000. Asked by Flem-ish. (May 25 07 3:14 PM)

    Must be Oudenaarde.

I think I'll stay away from 81002. At least for the time being.

Oudenaarde indeed.I did not find a valid on line reference to the pair of specs, but artbooks do mention it.Margaret of Parma was the name given to tapestry-weaver Vandergheynst's granddaughter.

This significant literary figure, trained as a physician, had an affair with the wife of a famous novelist who himself enjoyed a longtime mistress. A second writer's disagreement with him on a point of critical theory resulted in that writer's production of one of the world's most famous works of prose, one that, ironically, rather undermined its author's position. Who was the literary figure, who was the "cuckolded" novelist, and what is the famous work?
