No..there is no Ritter river either.The book was called the Painters'Book and a kind of North-European echo of Vasari's book: Le vite de piu eccellenti Pittori, Scultori รจ Architettori.

What most people will not be aware of is that the name van MandeR refers to a river now called MandeL. Just as Chinese people often mispronounce a R ( rice becoming lice) some locals here seem to have had problems with the river MandeR which now has become the MandeL.Van Mander is a typical example of the Exodus of Flemings who fled from Spanish persecution and became the co-founders of the protestant United Provinces.In books on art history the opposition Flemish/ Dutch often has led to confusions. In Sandwich they had "Dutch Houses" lived in by ..."Flemish immigrants" (weavers?).The distinction between the two nations was not very clear cut at the time. Silver Tulip Award?
