You may be talking about Plato's Hermaphrodite (taking its name from Hermes+Aphrodite), which had characteristics of both male and female. The section of his "Symposium" where he describes it can be found at http://www.geocities.com/bjlandry_00/Otherwriters/platosymposium.html
