Who was the first man to be emperor in Rome?

Question #81296. Asked by LuisR.. (May 31 07 6:51 PM)

"Emperor Augustus" is *generally* considered the first "Emperor" of Rome. Typical:

    However, there is some disagreement:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Empire#First_emperor

"No definitive answer exists regarding the identity of the first emperor of Rome. Under a purely technical point of view there is no clear first emperor, as the title itself was not an official post in the Roman constitutional system—rather, it was an amalgam of separate roles"

    Good points, mike.

It's also worth noting that according to legend, and prior to the establishment of the Roman Republic, there were supposedly six "kings", excluding Romulus:

Who is considered the last emperor of Rome?

It is thought to have many direct ancestors, one from predynastic and Ancient Egypt, another from Ancient Rome involving a certain Byzantine Emperor who changed his name in order to gain acceptance to his peers. Archeaologists have found evidence of its existance 5000 years ago in a place that natives would say was once very hot. What is it, who was the emperor and what, very recently, was found at that same excavation site?

In Rome, why did the death of an emperor often result in a power struggle?
