Which car is named after a Latin word for 'preceding'?

    Question #81353. Asked by tragic_flawed. (Jun 01 07 8:48 PM)

Preceding or praecedere, in Latin is the derivation for the Ford Prefect. The Ford Prefect obtained its name from the Praefecti, senior officials in the Roman Empire; however, as was the car, they were regarded as inferior. A Praefectus was to see over the supply of corn, the Emperor's bodyguard or Praetorio, and the fire brigade.
"The name may well owe as much to the implicit snobbery of the English Public School system, where a prefect was a superior youth, but still inferior to a real old master."

The above information in its original context can be found at The Classics Pages: Words and Derivations. The URL is the following: http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~loxias/classiccars.htm
