The Tibetan word lama came from the Sanskrit term, but the translation of lama was a different translation from Sanskrit. What was the original meaning of guru and why did they change the meaning of lama to 'highest' rather than sticking with the Sanskrit connotation?

Original meaning of guru was spiritual teacher. They changed lama to "highest" was that Enlightenment is the highest level of spiritual self-development possible, reached with the elimination of every negative trait and with the realization of every positive quality.
