Why are the Irish considered lucky: the luck of the Irish, pot of gold, four leaf clover, etc. Where's all this from?

It actually has to do with them being lucky enough to avoid being in the spotlight of world domination. Remember that ancient blessing, 'God invented whiskey to keep the Irish from ruling the world'?

At school in the British-inspired textbooks I always read stories about "An Englishman;, a Scotsman and an Irishman etc.". In such stories the Irishman was never the brightest one. So I think that whenever an Irishman is successful in anything, in the perception of a true Brit it must be a case of more luck than wisdom. And haven't they been doing very well in recent years?
