For 35 years, to the mystification of many, a certain word appeared throughout a major city, written in chalk over and over. What was this word, who was the illiterate who wrote it and where, and what tribute did his home city pay him and his famous graffito, long after his death and on a special occasion celebrated by the entire world?

Arthur Stace wrote "Eternity" all over Sydney. This was known as the "one-word sermon," distinctly Christian.
"Eternity" was written in light on the Sydney Harbour Bridge for the 2000 New Year's celebration.

Excellent, qp, you get a box of chalk. Take care what you do with it.
The "Eternity" mystery is mentioned in Sheridan Hay's "The Secret of Lost Things," a first novel by an Australian that has recently received some serious attention in the U.S.
Peasy might be interested; the protagonist is Tasmanian.
