A geodesic dome is the only man-made structure that becomes proportionally stronger as it increases in size. It is far stronger as complete a unit than the individual struts would suggest.
For a fuller, or Fuller, text, click on the link under references in the Wiki article "Tensegrity," the exhibited strength that results when push and pull have a win-win relationship with each other. Or just go here. http://www.rwgrayprojects.com/synergetics/s07/toc07.html
This reminds me of the Nash equilibrium, where no player has anything to gain by changing only his or her own strategy unilaterally. The most reliable probability factor in my own life seems to be Murphy's Law.
(Much more cutting and pasting here than is my wont.)
