When does Spain celebrate their independence day?

"Independence" from whom? The Roman Empire? Napoleon? Franco?
The Spanish may well celebrate their "National Day" on October 12, but that day doesn't involve "independence." It seems that the National Day holiday is of early 20th-century vintage,
The events of 1492, I might point out, involved Spain kicking out people who had lived for centuries in the region, who had contributed in an important fashion to its culture and economy, and who were suddenly told (by the fabled Ferdinand and Isabella) that they were no longer wanted. The consequences were vast and wide-ranging, through Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East:
