What is tumbleweed? Is it actually a specific plant?

A tumbleweed is described as any plant that breaks away from its roots in autumn and is driven by the wind as a light rolling mass.

Essentially, it's a plant that has broken away from it's roots, and thus goes sailing around in the wind.
