How did so many German names with braun in them become bron; e.g. Bron, Bronstein and Heilbron?

Question #82552. Asked by satguru. (Jun 26 07 5:33 PM)

Because immigration clerks couldn't differentiate between the spelling of Braun/Bron.

I think that may well apply to the names, but Wikipedia has Heilbraun which became Heilbron so the Germans applied it to their own towns as well if that was how it happened.

Things like that can be a result of dialects and local peculiarities. The English city of Bristow is an example of this. No, I meant to spell it that way... The people of that city had (and maybe still do) have a habit of putting an 'l' sound on the end of words ending in 'o' sounds, like stow. This one got into the actual spelling, so instead of Bristow we have Bristol. Bron is a very likely change to happen to braun - it's merely the shortening of a vowel - and in some cases it will have entered the spelling.
