    Grant, like Taylor and Eisenhower, went straight from the Army into the White House.
    Hoover was Secretary of Commerce which is not an elective office.
    Taft held numerous government positions before assuming the Presidency, but I believe they were all appointive, not elective. A possible elective office would have been a judgeship in Ohio.
