In British law/regulations what is the criteria for a town to become a city?

Thats what i thought too, a cathedral and a university.We have both and still no city status.

It's really just a matter of status. Traditionally, there are two criteria - the place had to have an Anglican cathedral and had to correspond to a local authority.

The presence or otherwise of a university has traditionally been irrelevant. This is not at all surprising as until the late 1820s only two places in England had universities, and to cap it all Cambridge didn't acquire city status till 1951.
