    King George III reigned from 1760 to 1820, and so was on the throne throughout the period in which the American colonies gained their independence.

    The United Kingdom did not exist at the time of the American Revolution.
    It only came into being when Ireland was united with Great Britain in 1801.
    George III was king of Great Britain until then.
    goggas site is misleading in that it only refers to England.

    There is dispute about whether the references in the Acts of Union to 'the United Kingdom of Great Britain' were the actual name for it, or whether they merely referred to the Kingdom as being the Kingdom of Great Britain and that it happened to be two previous kingdoms united. Unfortunately we can't ask the people responsible for writing the Acts exactly what they intended....
