How is absinthe different from alcohol?

    Question #82867. Asked by star_gazer. (Jul 03 07 3:39 PM)

Absinthe is a kind of alcohol created from a variety of herbs. Some would claim that the ingredient of wormwood gave absinthe haliocnagenic properties, therefore many countries banned the drink. In reality the poor (and unregulated) quality of the drink led to some dangerous and unhealthly consequences.

I'm fascinated by the fact that absinthe is such a popular subject around here. We've had many interesting questions about "The Green Fairy."

I was watching a documentary not long ago and it said that one of the reasons absinthe got such a bad rap was the practice of adding copper chloride to it to give it a richer green color. I work with chemicals at my job including copper chloride and it is extremly toxic.

My friend Vincent Van Gough was an absinthe drinker, he was under the influence of it when he cut of a portion of his ear and when he killed himself.
