Officially he has not been stripped. His name has been removed from the list of winners. Not the same thing. Pat McQuaid president of world cycling said "The eight-year statute of limitations has expired... We're not going to rewrite the history now." If Riis was stripped of his title the winner would have been drug tainted Jan Ullrich, if he too were disqualified the winner would be Richard Virenque who also admitted to doping.
