# Earliest Cartoon Strip
The first cartoon strip ever printed is The Yellow Kid, which first appeared in The New York Journal on October 18, 1896. This was the first strip to be published but was by no means the first cartoon character. Satirical cartoons of politicians, for example, had been published in newspapers for years. The Yellow Kid was first called Mickey Dugan. Mickey was bald, flap-eared, had a shy smile, and only spoke through the words scribbled on his yellow nightshirt. He excelled at making fun of upper-class customs.
