What chemicals are used in a chemical toilet?

This bottle of "campa chem" from the Thetford Corporation in Ann Arbor, MI, says it contains methyl alcohol and formaldehyde. I would suppose that besides an inert base it might contain other chemicals. It has a skull and crossbones on it and warns that swallowing it can be fatal or cause blindness or severe burns, and even the vapor is harmful. Jul 23 07, 9:46 AM

Since formaldehyde is very irritating to the skin, nose, and throat, it is being replaced by other proprietary blends such as glutaraldehyde and quaternary ammonium compounds, with non-staining dyes and nature-identical perfume oils.
