We know about the States of America, but how many counties?

Question #83844. Asked by deadlydalton. (Jul 26 07 5:27 PM)

This doesn't answer the question...at least not outright, but here's a really neat website for the U.S. that allows for pulling up each county (and related stats) by state.

I'm still not finding a "grand total" for counties, however, the following link is interactive and fairly easy to use. Click on each state for a detailed map of its counties. If someone is in the mood to count them all up...we'll have an answer.

A county of the United States is a local level of government smaller than a state and not smaller than a city or town, in a U.S. state or territory. The word "county" is used in 48 of the 50 states, while Louisiana uses the term "parish" and Alaska uses the word "borough." Including those, there are 3,077 counties in the US, an average of 62 counties per state. The state with the fewest counties is Delaware (three), and the state with the most is Texas (254).
