About how many World War I veterans are still alive?

    Question #83947. Asked by star_gazer. (Jul 29 07 3:59 PM)

    Apparently there are 23.

I had three relatives who joined up, though only one saw any real action. The last of them died in 2000.

I seriously doubt that you'll get an accurate count due to lousy record keeping.

There are a couple of conflicting numbers in WIKI. This WIKI article states 22 survivors. Along the way I encountered many articles where government officials state they have found "another" survivor.

"Two More WWI Veterans Surface in France -- Francois Jaffre, 104, was thought to have died; in fact, he merely had moved to a retirement home west of Paris.
And Rene Riffaud, 107, can thank his granddaughter for his new inclusion in France's dwindling and revered club of surviving WWI veterans."
