This is from OCTOBER 15, 1985, WHO CONTROLS CANADA? Newfoundland's Oil Economy by William Steif
Indeed one of the biggest government companies, Petro Canada, has just closed a deal with Chevron Corp. (the old Standard Oil of California) to buy 1,800 Gulf Canada service stations in central and western Canada, with some Canadian Government help. The deal was made possible because of Chevron's takeover of Gulf Oil.

As an update, Petro Cnada merged with (was absorbed by) Suncor Energy in 2009. Suncor has maintained Petro Canada as its Canadian chain of gas stations, apparently now down to 1500 locations, including some 280 recently rebranded Sunoco stations. Petro Canada's operations have otherwise been relabelled as Suncor's. http://www.suncor.com/en/about/914.aspx
