Looking at an almost 40-year-old map of London today, I saw that there was once a short thoroughfare called "Pickle Herring Street," sort of parallel to Tooley Street. It seems to have been done away with, abolished, destroyed. Can any U.K. resident tell me about this street, the origin of its name, and why it has disappeared? Online sites are not helping.

A car park?
Actually, all of this information is useful and gives me something to be going on with, so I'm appreciative. Robraw, I like your article, and talbot, you've offered some avenues to explore. (Pun entirely intended.) Thank you very much.
I found this map, ca. 1970, in the collection of a relative whose estate I'm trying to settle. It's marked with the location of a Land Rover dealer on Piccadilly. We know the car was purchased and are now trying to find the shipping bill, just out of curiosity -- how much did it cost to ship a Rover to the U.S. in 1970? -- but I'm finding the map itself fascinating.
