It is called Lincoln green, named, no doubt, for the city of Lincoln.

It wasn't, as many seem to think, the top cloth produced in Lincoln. That was Lincoln Scarlet. Possibly Will Scarlet could afford a more expensive suit... Lincoln Grey was the cheapest. Green was probably chosen for both economy and low visibility. No good trying an ambush wearing hi-vis. Grey was worn by those who couldn't afford the other cloths, but who could still afford to buy new. Many people then depended on cast-offs or home-spun home woven cloth which would probably not be dyed at all.
"In 1182 the Sheriff of Lincoln bought:
Scarlet at 6s 8d/ell
Green (or fine cloth) at 3s/ell
Blanchet also at 3s/ell
Gray at approximately 1s 8d/ell
(an ell is about equal to a yard.)
(This information is derived from the archives of the Pipe Roll Society.)"
