Volleyball? The viewing figures for the World Cup final top the billion mark. Whether enjoyed as a spectator sport, or played by people themselves, it surely must be football.

Auto Racing of "any sort" is the Number One viewed (live or TV)Sport in the World. (yes Auto Racing IS a team Sport. Unconventionally, but a TEAM none the less)
Soccer "played by 20 million Worldwide". That is less than the number of players in North America (Mexico, USA, Canada).

From the site given by Monkey:
"FIVB claims nearly 1billion people play volleyball in the world. One out of every six people. That's really interesting... When questioned, they backed off that statement to say that there are 33 million registered players, but that there are many more than that who are recreational players (obviously, but not 1 billion...). They also stated that there are definitely not four times the amount of volleyball players as soccer players in the world, which basically refuted their initial statement."
I've never played volleyball - wouldn't know how - and I've never come across it in any form. Soccer, now, yes. Even I have played. Not much, though. There are 60,000+ capacity stadia in towns and cities over most of the world where soccer is played. How many people go to a volleyball game? Then you have the small clubs - like Harrow Hill AFC which is the only one I have watched in the last 20 years - and the back street kids.
As to the other top ones in that list - table tennis I wouldn't be so sure about. Very popular in China and Japan. Regarded as a game for holiday camps and youth clubs here - when there's nothing better. (Apart from one or two clubs - don't know of any round here.) Basketball - in American influenced areas only. Here, it's regarded as a version of netball, which is for schoolgirls.
But go anywhere in the world outside the USA - you'll find kids kicking footballs around, and Sunday Leagues in addition to the millions watching it on TV and at the stadia. It's a school sport in places that have school sports (apart from ones like my old school which play rugger) (and apart from the USA...).
Just found that 20 million. The same site reckons golf is the most popular sport in Scotland. That'll be news to the fans of Celtic, Rangers, Hearts and so on. 20 million? There's 20 million people world-wide that play cricket! (Don't ask me why...)
As to motor racing - it's no more a team sport than horse racing. You have a pacemaker and a flier. And a load of people backstage - as in any highly professional 'sport'. It might have a lot of people watching it, but it's not exactly a participant sport, unlike football.
