Has underwater swimming ever been an Olympic event?

I'm pretty sure that in the 1896 Athens olympics a number of events were only for Greek naval personnel. One event was swimming beneath a series of boats.

No.
Diving, swiming, synchronized swimming, water polo, rowing, sailing are sports still in the Olympics.
Water motorsports was an Olympic event.
Water skiing was a demonstration sport at the Olympics.
But not underwater swimming.
