What is the most valuable piece of Chippendale furniture?

Question #84612. Asked by deadlydalton. (Aug 16 07 4:35 PM)

This is a bit difficult to answer, because some of the most expensive, original Chippendale pieces are still in place. They have not been sold on the open market. The State Bed at Harewood House might qualify as the most valuable, or possibly the inlaid commode at Renishaw Hall, apparently the firm's highest-priced commission back there in the 18th century. See below for information.

The other problem is that "Chippendale" was also a style exported out of the U.K. to a variety of countries. The Goddard-Townsend cabinetmakers' group of Rhode Island is regarded as having worked in the Chippendale mode. An elegant secretary created by this group ca. 1760 sold for over $12 million not too long ago.
