Thanks, Baloo! The landscape around here has been fairly desolate lately. I did not know that story, and had to double check to make sure it was really by Dickens. It sounded more like Mark Twain or even Ben Franklin. The middle reader at the bottom of this page tells what a rural American whistle stop was like. We've still not reached the continental level of civilization when it comes to trains and planes! I spend quite a bit of time on trains and stations in various parts of the UK and would like to point out that the railway sandwiches of today are excellent.
