marginal land - (1) land that is barely suitable, but not ideal, for a stated use; (2) income-producing land for which the income barely covers the carrying costs; (3) land that for any variety of reasons cannot be put to an economically productive use. Reasons include extreme terrain, geologic instability, soil chemistry, located in a frequent inundation area, and the like.
