    What did the nails on Man Ray's sculpture called 'The Gift' represent?

    		It has been suggested that the nails embedded in the iron in "Cadeau" have an erotic significance. Irons being associated with female domestic work, the nails may represent the supposedly threatening sexual power of women. A more interesting possibility in my view, is the contradiction presented by the "smoothing" function of an iron and the denial of that function represented by the nails. Cognitive dissonance was always a favorite Dadaist and Surrealist theme:
