    What does California mean in Spanish?

    		Several explanations of the name have been advanced, and it's not entirely clear that it was originally Spanish. This site considers the possibilities:

    		In Italy, it has the value of Hell!

    In parts of Italy an angry Italian might say "Go to California" rather than "Go to Hell" when telling someone off!
