Thank you lanfranco, although this is the answer I was looking for:
"During police questioning, Leopold's and Loeb's alibis broke down and each confessed. Although their confessions were in agreement about most major facts in the case, each blamed the other for the actual killing."
That quote is from the same Wiki site.
It certainly was a tragic but facinating case.

The main page of this site is one of the best I've seen on the whole matter, including priceless insights at Darrow, both defendents, the entire trial process.
Loeb is self-admittedly the killer, and had to spend considerable time attempting to calm Leopold after the deed was done. Of the two, Loeb was obviously the more complicated, and apparantly more prone to such an act. Appropriately enough, Leopold was eventually released from prison after serving 33 years, while Loeb was killed by a fellow inmate after serving about 12 years of his life sentence.
