It has been taken into belief of most that the Christmas tree started in Germany in the mid 700's. The evergreen tree represented the life of Jesus and how He stills lives on today. They became known as the 'Christ Tree' until the celebration known as Christmas started. Then it became the Christmas Tree.
1800 saw the first Christmas tree in Britain by Queen Charlotte, wife of George III at Windsor.

The idea of actually decorating the trees goes back to the time of the Pagans (in Europe at least). At midwinter, celebrations would include putting green foliage onto bare branches to remind the trees of how good they looked in spring and summer, and thus encourage them to begin to grow leaves again. These were of course deciduous trees, not the evergreens which have been adopted for their ermmm, 'evergreenness'. This is meant to represent eternal life.
